Are u okay? is a comprehensive easy to understand book about the therapy process. The text includes information about what it is, explanations of acronyms, types of therapy, different professionals, what to expect with the actual therapy session, navigating insurance & payment, advocating for yourself and more. There’s even a quick bullet point summary of the vital information in the appendix. It’s a very approachable read. It’s great for someone who doesn’t know much about the therapy process or those looking to learn more about mental health. People who are familiar with therapy can still learn from the book, but some topics will already be known to them. 

I liked the writing style. It’s factual but informal to make those unsure about the therapy process feel comfortable. Also if you’ve watched Kati Morton’s videos on YouTube, her unique voice definitely carries over into her book. However, I can see where some people, possibly the older generation, might not be as comfortable with this more casual tone. 

Overall, I think there’s a lot of great information that can help a lot of people. Everyone can learn something from her book. A wonderful resource for people who are considering therapy or know someone considering therapy. 

Also definitely check out her YouTube channel for all things mental health.

Triple Threat is the story of a journalist trying to investigate the death of her best friend. It was ruled a suicide after some sloppy police work, but Mallory knows better. The evidence doesn’t add up. She uses her resources and skills learned during her career to obtain justice for her friend.

It took me awhile to get into the story. The first 50 pages or so, I didn’t really care about it, but the story and characters slowly grew on me over time. Also there are a lot of people/circumstances that are interconnected but the connections weren’t made clear until later on in the book. The more I know, the more I enjoyed it. Also, certain characters’ disregard for women definitely bothered me. He wasn’t all bad though.

Now onto the positives. The book gives a behind the scenes look at very successful professional athletes. Specifically the world of basketball. Showing the good an athlete can do with their fame was great. The mystery aspect was intriguing too. It reminded me of an episode of Law and Order SVU. So definitely a plus in my book!

Overall some hits and some misses with Triple Threat. Great representation of professionals in an urban setting.

Mindfulness Matters is a fun, kind, lighthearted book that covers a lot of topics. If you want to know the author’s thoughts on basically all aspects of life ranging from physical and mental health to dating and even alternative medicine, you will find it all here. 

There are many topics in which I agree with her. The focus on sleep hygiene is great. I’m even going to take her suggestion and look into an app to filter out blue light. Also her focus on compassion which will help prevent anger is much appreciated. Most of the book highlights the importance of self care in some manner. 

A lot of the book is the author telling her story. While it’s interesting and informative, I found it difficult to apply to my life. There were also parts that I absolutely disagree with. While she meant well, talking about post traumatic growth as an option instead of PTSD felt a little invalidating. Also I wish the mentions of hot yoga came with a health waring. Hot yoga can be wonderful, but also not safe for people with certain health conditions. Great for her, but not for all. While incredibly interesting, I’m not sure that all of the information was scientifically accurate, so a reminder to all to do their own research before making health, wellness, and lifestyle changes. 

Obviously I have some strong concerns on the book. Enjoyable, informative, and highlights the benefits of alternative medicine and lifestyle choices. Just be cautious when making changes for yourself based on someone else’s lifestyle. Do what’s right for you.

The book’s summary is very close to the title. A book to help, mainly therapists or health professionals help their clients through different aspects of life. The book covers depression, anxiety, self injury, suicidal thoughts, trauma, substance use, LGBT2SQ+, grief and more. 

Each chapter starts with an in depth explanation of the topic and potential struggles a person may deal with. Then 2-3 example patients are introduced with their unique stories, as they relate to the topic at hand. The rest of the chapter alternates between giving information and then partial example sessions with the patients to demonstrate the information being applied. I found this to be very helpful. Also each chapter was written by a different professional in the field. Based on the summary I thought the book would apply more to me, as the caregiver of a family member. While incredibly interesting and informative, I’m probably not the intended audience. Psychology students, mental health professionals and even others who work with these patient populations would probably benefit from this informative book.

I would like to point out that the section on self injury is very insightful. From my experiences in psychology courses in college, many times the information is glossed over quickly or out dated. Not so in this book. A great resource for people looking for accurate information on the topic of self injury. 

Overall, a very informative, user friendly book about a variety of mental health topics. Perfect for those in the field looking for additional information.

Dispatches from the Heart is the life journey of Ed, who needs and ends up receiving a heart transplant in his 60s. The touching insightful memoir highlights the importance of healthy life choices. Even if they can’t prevent illness, they can help the person live their best life during the struggles and potentially slow the progression of the health issue. Ed has cardiomyopathy, a genetic condition in which the heart gets weaker and less efficient over time. Due to his family history he got tested and knew he would eventually succumb to the same disease his mother passed away from. 

The book is a unique look into the journey a lot of families go through. Knowing you need an organ transplant, but not knowing if you will get one. His story is told through different forms: passages from him and his wife looking back, emails from him or his wife, email responses from loved ones, photos, song suggestions, and occasionally short descriptions of the medical terminology. It gives an authentic look what the family was going through during this difficult time. The family looks towards their faith a lot during this challenging time, as they do throughout the rest of life as well. 

I liked that he highlights the important of pre-hab while on the waiting list for a cardiac transplant. It shows the importance of strengthening your body before the transplant, so you can have the best chance for a good outcome. 

While the outlook is extremely positive, it may be difficult for people who are struggling with the transplant process, because they may not see themselves in his process. While he struggled, as well as his family, it wasn’t shown that much. That’s fine. Completely his choice what he shares, but it could alienate some people who are struggling to deal with and relate. 

Overall, an enlightening, inspiring book that shows Ed’s journey in the organ transplant process. A great read for someone who may know someone going through something similar and wants to know more about it.

The Atlas of Disease is perfectly summarized in the title. The book features diseases that have caused epidemics, outbreaks and overall ill health in humans throughout history. The author uses maps to help illustrate the spread of, infection rate, and other useful information relating to each disease. 

Each disease featured starts with the basics about it, so even if you’re not an expert in the field you can learn about the disease enough to have a good understanding to read the rest of the section. The next few pages describe the history, transmission, and much other information related to that specific disease. I found it fascinating and learned some new information, even beyond what I had learned in my college courses. 

I found it very interesting to see how people’s actions affect the spread of disease including individual people’s choices, the political climate, war, poverty, and famine. Also the book is a great example of why vaccinations are so important. Yes, anti vaxxers I’m talking to you. Vaccinate your children!

However, some of the maps didn’t interest me that much. Partly because I was reading it on my iPhone so I had to constantly zoom in and move the page of the book around the see the whole map, so it was more bothersome than worth it. Also I already understood most of the information through reading the text, so the map didn’t give me too much additional information. But if you’re a big visual learner or very next to the subjects then the maps would be very helpful. 

All in all, I really enjoyed reading The Atlas of Disease. I highly recommend it, especially if you’re a nerd like me.

Besides the whole “it’s free factor”, I really enjoy learning about and trying new products before purchasing them.

Money can be tight for me, so I want to know I’m going to love a product before spending hard earned cash on it. I”m sure many of you can relate.

 

So when Daily Goodie Box was looking for bloggers to receive a Goodie Box and write a blog post about it, I jumped at the chance. I’ve already tried and reviewed products from them with my personal account. I’m super excited to share this month’s unboxing with you!

Susan Brown’s Baby – Foaming Shampoo

Since there aren’t any babies in the household, I tried it out myself. Taking one for the team! It’s super easy to use, definitely smells like typical baby shampoo, gentle, and leaves my hair feeling really soft. It seems like it would be really good for babies or toddlers. 

 

Nightfood – Midnight Chocolate Crunch Bars

My dad tried it and enjoyed the taste. I like the concept: a healthier version of a typically super processed junk food chocolate bar. The product would be great for people who want to indulge and satisfy their cravings but still be mindful of their healthy eating habits. 

 

Ethical Bean – Classic Medium Roast

It smells amazing! If it was decaf I could have tried it, but I keep smelling it. Oh my goodness, yum!!!

 

Gear Beast – Universal Smartphone Wallet

Such a cool concept for people on the go who don’t want to carry around a lot of extra items. Just your smartphone, a few credit cards, ID, and cash. Total honesty: I didn’t try it out on my phone since it’s over 4 years old. I was afraid that if I took off my current phone case I might not be able to get it back on without breaking. 

 

Coral LLC – Coral White Toothpaste Tea Tree

It’s different than traditional toothpaste. I tend to stick with the traditional toothpaste, because I haven’t found a natural one that I really love. I can definitely taste the cinnamon and tea tree oils in it, which isn’t bad but takes some getting used to. The coral gives it a bit of a different feel, which I think might whiten my teeth nicely. I haven’t used it enough to know for sure, but fingers crossed. 

 

Pure Chimp – Matcha Green Tea

I’ve never tried matcha before, but I really like green tea so I was super excited to try it. I loved it! And have been drinking it every morning since then. The smell is a little strong, but the taste is smooth and delicious. 

 

Chosen Foods – Vegan Mayo on the Go

I’ve never tried vegan mayo before, so it was another new experience for me. Fairly good taste though. 

 

Karma Nuts – Peri Peri Roasted Cashews

My dad tried these and enjoyed them. A bit spicy for him, but he does not like spicy food at all. A great healthy protein packed snack with a ton of flavor.

 

Veroni – Iron Energy

No one I know drinks energy drinks, so I couldn’t test out this product. Too much caffeine for me! But it seems like a fairly standard energy drink.

Make Your Life Better This Year consists of 35 concrete ways to improve your life. Each explanation is a few pages long. Sometimes with examples included. Some suggestions are incredibly obvious and have heard it from almost everyone. Others are a bit more unique. Almost all are helpful to improve your life.

I definitely took a lot of notes, for my book review and others just for me. I plan on implementing some of the suggestions in my own life. They’re not necessarily brand new ideas or even actions I haven’t done before, but more like good habits I’ve gotten out of doing. Such habits include meditation, journaling, and using the Pomodoro technique for productivity. I even learned a few new things too.

However, some of the ideas won’t work for me or most other people, in my opinion. To each their own I guess. Certain suggestions if taken very literally could be harmful. Such as, ignore your feelings and eat the same foods for one meal a day for several weeks. So be sure to use common sense when implementing any of these ideas in your life. Also the book is too brief to go in depth into most of the actions. It’s a good inspirational read, especially if you’re already familiar with the techniques suggested. If you aren’t familiar with them, you’ll be doing more research.

Overall, the book is good motivation to get back into the good habits you’ve slipped up on doing. It’s not a book for beginners to completely change their lives with. Good but I wish there was more in depth content of the suggested actions to be truly effective.

The 1% Rule is all about the process of achieving your goals, your big dreams, the wildest possibilities. First of all the author is very motivational, which you want in a business self help type book. He truly inspired me to start making more positive changes in my life. But even better, most of the book centers around practical steps to make your big dreams a possibility.

I loved that he focused on breaking everything down into small daily steps to hold yourself accountable. It will be different for each person, since each person’s goal and process is unique. The emphasis is on putting in the mundane, necessary hard work each day. Over time the results will at least add up, if not compound on each other. The process makes absolute sense yet many books don’t focus on this. I also appreciated the focus on doing what works for you and not worrying what other people think. I also loved the little trick the author uses to keep motivated. Makes complete sense and is incredibly helpful when you get in a slump.

Even with all these amazing aspects, at times it felt a bit much. It’s definitely a book for highly motivated people who will stop at nothing to make their dreams a reality. I prefer, and actually require, a bit more balance and calmness in my life.

However, I’ve already implemented changes in my daily routine based on the author’s suggestions in the book. Keeping myself accountable and putting in consistent daily work towards my book blog. And I’ve already seen small improvements. The 1% Rule is a self help book geared towards business that might actually help you get where you want to go.

Review:

Let me start by saying this: I always have a blank sheet of paper as my bookmark to jot down notes as I read, to refer back to later while writing my book reviews. I didn’t write down any notes for this book. Not one! That wasn’t on purpose. I was completely engrossed in Believe Me, and forgot to do anything but read.

I’ve never watched the Real Housewives franchise, so I wasn’t coming into this book as a fan of the show. But I left this reading experience as a fan of Yolanda Hadid. Her strength, courage, tenacity, and kindness in the face of a very difficult chronic illness is inspiring. I learned so much about her journey and battle for health. She embraces conventional and unconventional medical treatments, doing her research to find out what may help her. I learned so much from this book, and I can’t recommend it enough. 

The only slight downfall that I should mention is that Yolanda had a lot of unconventional, untested by the FDA treatments, that cost a lot of money. I hope that people don’t randomly think to try all the treatments without extensive research and guidance by a health care provider. She does warm about this multiple times throughout. 

Believe Me is a book I will be thinking about for a long time.
